HULA FRIENDS PLEASE READ / SHARE:
This is a link to a highly insensitive and offensive review by dance critic Alastair Macaulay of The New York Times. In addition to many uneducated and idiotic statements, he refers to the traditional Hawaiian malo as a “jock strap”. His limited knowledge of hula and Hawaiian culture is prominently exhibited throughout this poorly written review. This sort of ignorance should not be condoned or tolerated and only further perpetuates the misrepresentation of our culture.
Alastair is no stranger to making poor judgment calls in his reviews. In 2010 he commented on the weight of ballet dancer Jenifer Ringer. In a review of a performance of The Nutcracker, he wrote that Ringer, as the Sugar Plum Fairy, “looked as if she’d eaten one sugar plum too many.”
